Cromer pier with plenty of warm sunshine but with a cold and brisk wind

Warmer air will move in next week with a return to drier and brighter weather for a time.

High pressure from the south-west means that temperatures could reach 17C in south-east England on Tuesday.

The change in weather will be welcome by many after a windy, chilly weekend with rain, hail and even hill snow in the north.

Whoever said the weather in spring was boring?

When do the clocks go forward and what is Daylight Saving Time?

By Sunday, heavy rain will spread south and east across the UK followed by some wintry showers and sunny spells across Scotland, Northern Ireland and later in the day northern England and Wales.

There will also be some high waves up to eight metres around the coast of north and west Scotland and Northern Ireland

Temperatures no Sunday will be around 8 to 12C with a aignificant wind chill.

Into next week there are signs it might get a bit more settled and drier with high pressure nudging in.

While often quite cloudy, there will be some sunny intervals and temperatures will rise to around 10 to 16C, possibly even 17C in the south-east of England.

The weather in early spring can be fickle in the UK.

While this week temperatures have struggled to get past single figures, last week we were into the twenties.

This change is all down to the wind direction and what type of air is being dragged into the UK.

The Arctic however is still relatively cold from winter. So any northerly wind in the UK, will drag that colder air and bring lower temperatures.

Now we are past the spring equinox, the northern hemisphere starts to get more daylight and a strengthening Sun.

Temperatures are warming up quickly across North Africa and the Mediterranean and with any southerly wind in the UK, that air is drawn up from the south, boosting our temperatures.

Spring to winter and back again in an instant

These pictures show how the weather in Spean Bridge, Highland has varied this week from warm sunny spells to snow falling

You may be familiar with the phrase 'four seasons in one day' used to describe the weather in spring.

In March our nights are still around 11 hours in length and so with clear skies, temperatures still have enough time to fall close to and below freezing to bring some frosty mornings.

So we might start a morning feeling like winter, needing a thick coat.

However, the increasingly strong spring sunshine gets to work and temperatures can rise quite rapidly. By lunchtime, out of the wind, it can even feel like summer with the strength of the Sun bringing with it a world of wardrobe dilemmas.
