Israel and Lebanon are due to hold talks in Washington on Tuesday, though a ceasefire remains a distant prospect. Israel says it will not discuss any halt to the fighting with Hezbollah, which it considers the main obstacle to peace.
The meeting will mark the first formal contact between the two countries, which have no diplomatic relations. Meanwhile, Lebanese authorities say Israeli strikes have killed more than 1,950 people, including over 350 on the first day of the US-Iran ceasefire alone. Daniel Quinlan reports.
Russia has continued to pound Ukraine in the hours leading up to a 36-hour pause in its war of aggression. Three Ukrainians were killed overnight and dozens were injured in drone attacks on Odesa, Poltava and Sumy.
