Delano D'Souza is pleased to welcome Dr. Melissa Sterry, Scientist, Designer, Strategist and Founding Director of Panarchic Codex® : Design for Living with Wildfire. Dr. Sterry reframes wildfire as a systemic phenomenon: climate change intensifies heat and drought, nineteenth century land engineering has produced highly combustible plantation forests, and expanding human activity increases ignition opportunities. Once these factors align, fires can evolve into autonomous systems that generate their own weather and even create new ignition sources. While she praises France's emergency response, Dr. Sterry contends that prevention and firefighting alone cannot solve the problem. The real challenge lies in redesigning landscapes before fires gain momentum, shifting policy from reacting to disasters towards preventing them through long-term ecological resistance and resilience.
Fanned by the mistral and extreme heat, the blaze swept through 1,000 hectares in six hours; 2,500 people were evacuated near the Gros Bessillon massif and the village of Correns is now completely cut off.
George Clooney and his family have evacuated their home in southeastern France after a nearby wildfire threatened the area, his agent said Thursday. Blazes continued to scorch parts of the country during a prolonged spell of extreme summer heat.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned on Friday that a strengthening El Niño is intensifying an already worsening climate crisis, saying the weather phenomenon is "adding fuel to a planet already on fire" and could drive record-breaking...
Of 206 fires recorded since Wednesday, 202 had been brought under control by Friday, but some remained active across western and southern coasts, with high temperatures and strong winds forecast to persist across 10 provinces.
Greek authorities on Friday ordered the partial evacuation of a suburb west of Athens after a forest fire broke out on a nearby mountain, prompting an emergency alert as firefighters battled to contain the blaze.
Firefighters in southwestern France were working to control the last hot spots of a massive wildfire that has burned an area four times the size of Paris and forced thousands out of their homes. The blazes that have burned 42,000 hectares of pine...
A new study by researchers from the World Weather Attribution has found that human-induced climate change played a significant role in the wildfires that have gripped France and Spain in the past week. The hot and dry conditions brought about by...
