Jonny Clayton claimed his fourth nightly win of this year's Premier League
Jonny Clayton delighted the Rotterdam crowd as he beat Luke Littler 6-4 to extend his lead at the top of the Premier League table.
The Welshman kept his cool during an early blitz from Littler in the final and came through to claim back-to-back nightly wins and his fourth of the year.
Littler was booed throughout the night following his exchange with Dutch number one Gian van Veen in Manchester two weeks ago but shrugged it off to reach the final.
But having beaten Gerwyn Price in the quarter-finals and held off a fight back from world number two Luke Humphries to win a thrilling semi-final 6-5, Clayton proved a challenge too far.
Clayton is now five points clear of second-placed Littler but the world champion has an 11-point buffer to fifth and both men are all-but assured of a place at the O2 Arena for finals night on 28 May.
"I don't watch many games back but I watched last week's game against Michael [van Gerwen] back and it hurt a little bit when someone said I was favourite to finish bottom - that really hurt and annoyed me," Clayton told Sky Sports.
"That really hurt. I've been here three times before and I've done finals night so hopefully I can prove them wrong.
"Definitely [it has given him some fuel]. They might be looking at some other people. They've got the wrong person."
Clayton showed his resilience throughout the evening as he beat home favourite Michael van Gerwen in the quarter-finals and then battled past Josh Rock in the last four.
He was quickly 2-0 down in the final with Littler hitting four of his seven 180s to race into the lead but the teenager was unable to sustain that level and Clayton clawed his way back.
His scoring was solid rather than spectacular but an average of 92.92 did not tell the full story as Clayton produced in the key moments, showing ruthless efficiency on the doubles for a 60% checkout rate.
That proved the difference with Littler hitting just four of his 15 darts at double.

Dutch duo fall in quarter-finals
In contrast to the hostile reception for Littler, Dutch duo Van Veen and Van Gerwen were roared on to the stage by the fans in Rotterdam.
However, the pair were unable to deliver in front of their home crowd with Van Veen out of sorts against a much-improved Humphries as the Englishman claimed a comfortable 6-2 win.
That took the defending champion above Van Veen into fifth and to within three points of Van Gerwen in the final play-off place.
Van Gerwen had the chance to extend that gap to five but he was swept aside by Clayton, a 6-2 triumph for the Welshman leaving the Dutch fans stunned and keeping the race for the top four in the balance.
Had Humphries completed his comeback against Littler in the semis, it could have been even tighter.
Stephen Bunting still has hope of qualifying despite a 6-1 loss to Rock, in which he found himself 4-0 down despite averaging 114 as a result of the Northern Irishman starting with four from four on the doubles.
Price stays third despite a second quarter-final exit in as many weeks.

Premier League Darts format and points system
Premier League Darts is played across 16 initial weeks in the league stage with quarter-finals, semi-finals and a final each night.
Each of the eight players is guaranteed to face the other seven in the quarter-finals in weeks one to seven and 9-15, with week eight and week 16 fixtures done off the table. It means we will get fourth v fifth in Sheffield on the final league-stage night, with the play-off spots potentially on the line.
Players earn two points per quarter-final win, an additional point if they win their semi-final and five for winning the night.
The top four players after the group stage progress to the play-off night at London's O2 Arena on 28 May, with first facing fourth and second against third in a best-of-19-leg match. The final, which is the best of 21 legs, follows.
If players are level on points after the 16 weeks then places are decided by nights won and then matches won.
