There are two hours left before the sun settles deep into the alleys of the old town. Just over three before it sinks into the sea behind Havana. Mateus del Pino Padrón knows exactly how much time he has for the walk back. "It takes me one hour and five minutes to get home," he says. "I walk fast, but I can't wait too long."
It’s late on a Wednesday afternoon in late March and del Pino is taking a breather outside a café in Vedado, one of the most upscale neighborhoods in the Cuban capital. A thin film of sweat covers his face, blond-dyed tips of hair poke out from under his cap. He digs a carton of Popular cigarettes out of his backpack, takes a labored breath and sets it on the table.

He lives with his mother and younger sister in the eastern part of Havana, the 29-year-old says. He had come to the center of the city that morning to stock up on cigarettes. "We pay $10 per carton and resell them for $11," he says. "We use the profit to buy oil and rice. That's how we survive."
